The 50 best sushi restaurants and sushi bars in Auckland (2024)

Katsura Japanese Cuisine is a japanese restaurant with teppanyaki chefs and sushi options. It's close to the Auckland CBD and offers a buffet service at different times of the day. The food was fresh, but not exceptional.

If you enjoy Japanese food, this buffet is the perfect place for you. The fish is incredibly fresh, and there are numerous sushi options to choose from. I particularly loved the salmon. The desserts are also quite good, adding to a well-rounded dining experience.

We had limited time to stay in Katsura when we visited so it was such a pity there wasn't a lot of time to fully enjoy the experience and food. The waitress was very friendly and helpful with rushing our orders, the fish was fresh and our mains were satisfactory :)

There were many options, and the seafood/ sashimi were all reasonably fresh. Pleasant , courteous staff. Tonight wasn't that packed which was great. I had higher expectations for the $105 price tag, but overall, it represented pretty good value.

I had dinner at the restaurant with my friend tonight and I have to say it's hands down one of the best Japanese buffets in Auckland! The service was outstanding and the teppanyaki was my favorite - the salmon was perfectly cooked with a crispy outside and a tender inside. It was just perfect, not overcooked at all. There was a great selection of sashimi, scampi, and oysters too. The dessert was delicious. The staff were so friendly and appreciative, the place was spotless, and almost every dish was top-notch. I highly recommend this place to my friends and family!

Japanese delight! You can feast on as many tempura, sushi, sashimi, oysters, prawns etc as you want. Eight at Cordis is a better buffet for me but the icing on the cake at Katsura is the creme brulee and panna cotta.

Came for a Birthday celebration, I came here once when I was very young and had memory of the very delicious scampi, which it did not disappoint me, the scampi is fresh and delicious. The oysters and Argentina red prawns were also good, but the quality varies from one to another honestly. The sashimis are also quite nice and fresh. However, I did expect more from the hot meals, since the dining experience is not cheap. The tempura is ok, the salmon croquette is too salty for my taste and the Japanese egg custard doesn’t taste right too, I love it and I often make it at home by myself, I can confidently say that I can make better steam eggs then them.Aside from the hot meals, I have to also mention that the sushi looked like they’ve been put out for days, there’s not sweetness from the fish, it didn’t have the shine fresh sushi should have as well. Besides, The cooked prawns and crabs are not fresh as well… which is a disappointment because this should be a seafood buffet, but they’re not even doing the seafood properly. And the most ridiculous thing is when I wanted to get some teppanyaki, the dude started roasting huge loafs of beef which left the cooking table no space😂 I honestly have no words for that, we still had 45mins till the session finished but he’s cooking for tomorrow??? That’s ridiculous…

We were first a bit sceptical about a Japanese buffet dinner in Auckland. Luckily, we were proved wrong. The seafood range is a limited range of 2 types of prawns, scampi, oysters, mussels and crab. However, the quality is top grade. Oysters are plump and juicy and more than twice the size that are served in some famous buffet restaurants in Australia. There are various types of nigiri sushi rolls and we think the best one was eel sushi.White sashimi is of a better quality than red/salmon. There are many different cold dishes and Japanese salad. Hot dishes include tagoyaki, beef cheeks, gyoza, and others. Prawn and vegetables tempura are fried in light batter. Of course, you cannot compare them to the ones served at top tempura restaurants in Japan. However, they are above average for a buffet restaurant. To top it all, you can customise your BBQ dish cooked by a teppanyaki chef on the spot.Food is replenished as soon as the staff notice the stock is low. This is different from some buffet restaurants that are slow to replenish the food, and patrons have to fight before they disappear. The staff are polite and efficient undertheleadershipof their manager, Danish. They empty the shell bowls frequently so we don't have to worry where to place oyster and prawn shells. The buffet price is not cheap, but both my wife and I believe it is superb value.Don't miss this restaurant if you happen to be in Auckland. It's only a few minutes from the busy Queen StreetWe will certainly go there again next time when we are in Auckland.

Great service! Good selection of food for the Grand Buffet dinner - Sunday. Staff are all very friendly, food was good. I liked the tempura veges and sashimi best. The only complaint I have are the prawns, they were tasteless but otherwise everything else was fresh and tasty:)

So, we thought we were going for a buffet, but turns out, their buffet is a weekend warrior, only strutting its stuff from Wednesday to Sunday. Not keen on finding another spot, we settled for their à la carte menu. It didn't exactly blow our socks off, but hey, it didn't disappoint either. Thankfully, the staff were like rays of sunshine on a cloudy day—super friendly. We might just muster up the courage to hit their buffet again.

Fresh sashimi,Salmon,Tuna,King fish,Oysters,Shrimp and Scampy. Same selection of nigiri. Then there's tempura shrimp and takoyaki. And then there is the tepenyaki chef cooking what you want cooked. And finally the desert. My first plate was probably more than the cost to dine there. If you love Japanese buffet then this is the place to go. I'll be back many more times.

Absolute ripoff. Came here to celebrate a birthday and we were incredibly disappointed. Everything is terribly overpriced including the $6 tiny single serving of white rice. The food and drinks menus were both falling apart and felt like they had been curated over a decade ago.The non-alcoholic section was a joke. V, Mountain Dew and Sprite. Both the restaurant and hotel are in desperate need of a refurb. Both are tired and sad, catering to travellers staying at the hotel and afraid to venture outside. Not recommended.

I came back since my last visit on Christmas Eve. I got a booking tonight for the newly opened $69 Sunday 5pm Buffet. It is definitely more affordable than the current Wed-Sat $100 buffet sessions. Well, they didn't have oyster and scampi for Sunday evening buffet, but I am still glad as I could more focus on the Variety of Sashimi and Tephanyaki. Ah, and there's a free drink, too. The dessert 🍨 corner was wonderful as they usually do. 😋 I enjoyed this and would like to come back for this.

Service is good - staff clear the plates quickly.Food is a mixed bag - great red prawn and scampi (for a $115 buffet). Very poor crab and cooked shrimp - need to change supplier as quality is poor, probably better if they serve shell-fish like clams. OK oysters, sashimi and sushi. Decent to good cooked food section - good beef cheeks and tempura, good seafood chowder, not so good for the deep fried oyster.

TLDR - Awesome Japanese all you can eat buffet, especially if you LOVE seafood.Comparison - Better than Fortuna or Valentines. For seafood options, even better than Stratosphere. But for overall variety, Stratosphere is better. Haven't tried Eight yet, so can't give a comparison there.Cost - We went on a Saturday night for the 5pm session. Total cost $240 for 2 people. Buffet - $115 and drink $5.We got until 7pm to enjoy the food. The other session starts at 7.30pm and ends at 9.30pm.If you arrive early, there is plenty of seating infront of the restaurant and bar to spend your time. Our dinner started about a 5mins before 5pm. The wait staff who took us to our table gave us a mini tour of the buffet as well. Drink orders were taken immediately. We got a table for 2 and their tables are good sized. While the plates are smaller than the standard size dinner plates, we could arrange 5-6 plates full of food on the table even with other variety of items on the table. Water bottle/ glasses and sauce pot/ dipping dishes are available at your table. More are available at a buffet table. They also give you a large bowl to discard any food scraps and will clear and replace it as it gets full during the dinner. We ate a whole lot of seafood and ours got replaced 5-6 times. Wait staff are very friendly and attentive. Empty plates, bowls, cups and what not will get taken from the table as soon as possible.☆Menu☆_______________________♡ Variety of drinks ♡● A lot of alcoholic options and some non alcoholic options including tea and soft drinks.♡ Variety of food ♡● Seafood table - Steamed and raw seafood section full of crabs, prawns, scampi, crawfish, mussels and oyster.● Salad table - Various yummy seafood and vegetable options.● Sashimi, sushi and nigiri● Teppanyaki - Prawns, salmon, mussels, squid, beef, chicken, courgette, mushroom, onion, bell peppers..etc to choose from and hand over to the chef. He will make a yummy plate of roasted garlic teppanyaki meal from the items you choose.● Soup section - Ramen and miso soup with top ups like ramen noodles, seaweed, scallions, tofu and wakame to choose from.● Sandwich section - Brioche bread with beef cheek and some other veggies● Hot food section - Fried rice, Japanese ratatouille, salmon wings, takoyaki, salmon croquets, KFC (Katsura Fried chicken), saucy crabs, tempura prawns and veggies, japanese savoury custard, prawn curry dish,...etc.● Desserts - Sake creme brulee, assorted cakes and cheese cakes, fruit, panna cotta, tiramisu...etc.Staff will also serve you ice cream when the dinner is closer to the end. Their choccy ice cream is so good. We went there for our anniversary and got a cheesecake with a congratulatory message written on it. That was a pleasant surprise and a nice gesture from them.● Tea table________________________All the food was fresh and yum. Seafood table was so good, so I mainly ate seafood.Ramen soup base was surprisingly good as well. Try their savoury egg custard in that soup. That was a winning combo for me to the point I drank soup instead of water to wash down the food.Sake creme brulee was ah-mazing.What I would do next time - Take gloves with me.So I can eat all the messy seafood with my hands without any worries. Staff will give you a small bowl with a lemon slice in it to wash hands upon request. That was helpful but not as good as cleaning hands in a sink.I wish there is a small sink inside the restaurant to wash hands, because eating seafood like scampi, crawfish, crabs..etc is very messy and need hands. The bathrooms are across the floor and are nearby but have to walk out of the restaurant to wash hands which is what I did at the end of our dinner but is a hassle to do so time to time during the dinner.P. S. - I forgot to take photos before the dinner.🙈 So mine are hastily taken photos of leftovers after all the guests left.

I wish, hoping there are more food selections for the $115. Overall experience were good. Strongly recommended the tenpanyaki (pan grill sections), didn’t even have chance to take photos, as we are concentrating on eating. We shall be back again soon, just for the grill & desserts session ^^

Katsura Japanese Seafood Buffet is an awesome experience and they have plenty of variety on offer. From sashimi, oysters, scampi, prawns, teppanyaki, sushi, noodles, tempura, desserts and lots more. Best to book online early and it's very limited spaces. 2 hours time limit apples for each sitting. 2 hours free parking in the hotel car park is available, just tell them your registration plate when paying. $5 per hour thereafter.

William L — Google review

Food quality is good but I would not recommend. You pay a hefty $115 but only have 2 hours to eat. Which means for the entire 2 hours you cannot have a conversation and just have to focus on eating otherwise it’s not worth it. For $125 pp I can get a lot more at a non-buffet restaurant and eat comfortably without feeling rushed.Nah, not worth it.

I wentto Katsura for Christmas Eve dinner. It was an overall well-organized seafood buffet.I just found several minor things that would be better if they could develop, for example, quantity of rice for one piece of sushi, freshness of oysters, information about 2 hours free parking, and I noticed that they barely pick up the phone calls during their working hours (maybe they are struggling with less staff).Except that, they offered quite a good value for a variety of food. Also, the service of the team was excellent. I appreciated their hard work during meal time. Thanks! I will be back

Food was just amazing. Very fresh seafood you can have here. Atmosphere was good too.Regarding the service, one of the waiter was very rushing and tried to take our plates. When they were cleaning a table, just loud. Asked chef to cook meat well-done but he cooked medium rare twice. One of the chef wasn't friendly. The lady at the cashier was friendly.

Katsura Japanese Cuisine offers a delicious seafood buffet at a reasonable price. However, the dining experience was significantly marred by unprofessional service, a rushed atmosphere, and an empty restaurant. Despite being informed of the last order time at 9:30 PM upon entering, the restaurant began clearing the buffet at 9:15 PM, creating a noisy and rushed environment. Additionally, the waitress was rude when questioned about the early buffet clearance, dismissively stating, "If you want, we can bring all the buffet back." This response was unprofessional and did not address the issue of the early clearance. Furthermore, I was served a bottled beer in a draft glass, despite having ordered draft beers. This error indicated a lack of attention to detail and further detracted from the dining experience. The restaurant was completely empty by the time I arrived at 8:00 PM, and there was only one other customer present throughout our meal. These factors, combined with the incorrect beverage order, significantly detracted from the dining experience. If the restaurant could improve staff training, ensure clear communication, and maintain consistent service, it could provide a truly memorable experience.
